Finding the Best BJJ Gi for You (Full BJJ Gi Guide with 60+ Reviews)

How to find the best bjj gi?

I’ve been training Brazilian jiu jitsu for over 6 years and between me and my three brothers who also train (see image below). We probably have over 2 dozen gi’s – some of them are in frequent rotation while others sit stuffed away behid winter coats in the closet.

BJJ gi’s aren’t cheap so you want to make sure you are buying one that is correctly fitted, solid quality, and will last more than your first month or two.

There’s a bunch of things to considering when buying a gi for jiu jitsu. We’eve made this guide to be helpful before you drop that $100+ on a gi that feels like you’re wearing your dad’s bathrobe.

Quick note: some BJJ schools require you to buy their own brand of gis, but if they don’t, this is the post for you.

What Are the Best Gi Brands?

Some of the best gi brands are listed in the table below.

I have broken down the gi brands based on prices of their most popular gi’s. Again, with more affordable gi’s fit and durability may be at stake.

If you think you are going to be sticking with bjj for a bit or are looking to add a new gi to your collection, I’d recommend aiming for mid range gi’s or higher end gi’s if you have the money to spare.

I promise once you buy a high end gi, it will be hard to ever go back – if you like the fit from a mid range gi of certain brand try one of their preimum gis. (This is how I found my favorite higher end gi’s from Fuji and Kingz)

Gi Buying Tips – Key Things to Keep in Mind

  • We don’t recommend buying an expensive gi for your first gi (you may not stick wtih bjj or you may not have found your ideal size yet)
  • When it comes to more expensive BJJ gi’s what you are paying for is fit, quality, and durability
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different weaves, sizes, and weights (I’ve learned to prefer more lightweight gi’s with a lighter GSM and usually pearl weave jackets – see further down for these explained)
  • Keep an eye out for discounts from retailers and sites like bjjhq.com
  • Before buying a gi always make sure you check out the retailers return and refund options
  • We recommend always researching a variety of gi’s and sizing options first
  • Finally, all prices listed in the post are in USD and current as of this writing (and will be updated periodically)

Finding the Best BJJ Gi for Your Money:

How much do BJJ GIs cost?

You can expect a BJJ GI to cost around $60-$200 this, of course, depends on brand, durability, and quality.

Almost all GI brands and manufacturers offer a sizing guide and product description, such as the fabrics used, colors and even the type of weaves. It is available on their websites to help you choose your BJJ GI.

A good tip is to also keep an eye out on bjjhq.com – they do daily deals, and you can often come across a great gi on sale from some of the top gi brands.

Though getting a bjj gi depends on your choice and liking, it is to your advantage if you know some brands that can provide the most value for your money and will last you a long time.

What you are paying for when buying a quality gi is:

  • ideal sizing and fit
  • durability
  • quality

Why you can trust this list:

Between me and my three brothers (who also train bjj), we probably own over 2 dozen bjj gi’s.

Here’s me in the blue “goose feather” gi from 93 Brand (with the exemplary belt tying skills*)

Some of them are our favorites that stay in consistent use, and others stay stuffed away in closets or tucked underneath itchy holiday sweaters.

I’ve compiled this list by scouring reviews from amazon, reddit, bjjhq, as well as gi vendor’s websites over the course of a long week of researching, writing, and formatting. Over 40+ hours went into this post, I wanted to create a complete and comprehensive guide for buying a gi as well as listing over 60+ gis from some of the most popular (and some of the not so popular) gi manufacturers.

This selection is meant to be affordable and good for anyone training bjj from beginners to those who have be training for a long time.

If I don’t have first hand experience wearing a gi or brand on this list, I know someone personally who has – usually through my brothers or training partners at my bjj gym.

Here Are Some of the Gis from the Best BJJ Gi Brands:

Affordable Gi’s

The thing to worry about with the more affordable bjj gi’s is the sizing. What you are paying for with more expensive gis is usually better sizing, fit, quality, and durability.

With that being said here are some affordable gi’s to get you started in bjj.

1. Sanabul:

Sanabul Essentials V.2 Ultra Light Preshrunk BJJ Jiu Jitsu Gi

COLORS: White, Black, Gray, Blue, Navy, Green

If you’re new to bjj and really don’t want to drop 100+ on a gi that may end up just sittiing in your closet, then I recommend giving Sanabul Gi’s a shot.

Again, what you generally pay for with more expensive Gi’s are higher quality material, better fit, and durability, so if you think you’re going to be in to BJJ for the long haul I recommend checking out the more mid ranage quality Gi’s like those from Gold BJJ or Fuji shown in the next section below.

That being said, my brother bought this Sanabul gi for himself, and he said that he has no major complaints (even when compared to his more expensive gi from Inverted gear).

FEATURES:
Lightweight
Subtle Design
Made with pre-shrunk fabric
Reinforced stitching in jackets and pants

Sanabul has been the go-to affordable brand for many looking for a no frills gi to train in. BJJ black belt Guilherme Bomba and famed Jiu-Jitsu coach John Danaher have even used it during their prior jiu jitsu training.

This pre-shrunk, single-weave is also stiff, has a rubberized collar jacket with pants, is a durable GI, and is perfect for training or competitions.

These are all some good features at a pretty reasonable price.

2. Hawk Ultralight Preshrunk Gi’s:

Hawk BJJ Gi

COLORS: White, Black, Gray, Blue, Military Green

If you’re on a budget but still want quality GI, Hawk Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi may be a good option for you.

Again, with cheaper gi’s the biggest concerns are fit and durability.

More premium gi’s will fit better, last longer, and won’t have signs of tears, or seams ripping.

FEATURES:
Lightweight
Minimum price, maximum quality
Minimal Design
Made with pre-shrunk fabric
*This gi is ideal for first time gi buyers

What you get when buying a Hawk gi is a pearl weave jacket and ripstop pants weighing 10oz with a white belt.

This BJJ gI only has a nominal design: a logo behind the neck and shoulders and nothing in the front. Ideal, for putting gi patches of your school gym.

It is made of a pre-shrunk (but we still suggest washing any gi’s in cold water and hanging dry) fabric and is lightweight, making it comfortable to wear.

3. Elite Sports:

Elite Sports BJJ GI for Men

COLORS: White, Black, Blue, Gray, Green, Navy, Red, Grey Camo, Red, Yellow

So I’m a big fan of Elite gear for bjj. Their no gi shorts and rash guards are still in my weekly rotation after years of trying out other (more expensive) brands.

This is another solid option for an affordable, entry level gi.

FEATURES:
Lightweight
Made with pre-shrunk and anti-odor fabric
Reinforced stitching in seams
Drawstring pant closure
*This gi is ideal for first time gi buyers who don’t mind brand labels

Constructed with a 400 gsm pearl weave and a pre-shrunk fabric, you won’t ever have to be concerned about the size of your lightweight bjj gi shrinking.

It ensures that it is suitable for training and competition and features a fabric with anti-odor treatment, allowing you to move without restrictions and knowing that you won’t show up to class with your gi smelling funky after the last laundry cycle.

Best All-Around BJJ GIs

1. Kingz Lightweight Pearl Weave Pro:

Man wearing Kingz Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi

COLORS: White, Black, Blue

Here we have some of the mid range great value bjj gi’s. These tend to range from $100-140 which is about standard for a quality gi from a more popular brand.

Kingz Kimonos is one of the standout gi makers, and I would put their Lightweight Pearl Weave Pro gi up against any of the more expensive brands like Origin or Scramble.

If you prefer a lighter gi their pearl weave gi is definitely a good option.

FEATURES:
Lightweight
Jacket uses a rubber lapel insert
Made with pre-shrunk fabric
Double-reinforced knee padding

The Kingz BJJ GI comes in a 400 gsm pearl weave set with a rubber lapel insert jacket, 10oz cotton pants, and a white belt.

There are three choices of colors and vast options of sizes.

In addition, there are specially-designed sizes for taller and wide-frame fighters.

With an excellent material used, reinforcing, and stitching, this product is flexible, lightweight, and durable; it is ready to use for all the intense bjj training whether at the gym or a competition.

2. Fuji All-Around Gi:

FUJI– All-Around BJJ Uniform in black

COLORS: White, Black, Blue, Navy, Pink

The FUJI All-around is a jiu jitsu gi that has won several awards and been acknowledged and recommended by many. It simple design, quality materials, and great fit make it a perfect gi for anyone looking to buy a mid range gi that will last.

It has also been tested and approved by several well known bjj teams such as Team Renzo Gracie and Brazilian Top Team.

FEATURES:
Durable, reinforced stress points
Premium cotton blend
Stiff rubber collar
Reinforced knee

The mid-weight gi is designed to endure for an extended period. It offers the practitioners durability and, at the same time, comfort.

The jacket and the pants are a pure cotton blend and twill weaved. Its overall design is minimal, with few logos, especially on the front.

With this BJJ GI, you’ll get simplicity, good quality, and heavy durability.

3. Gold BJJ Foundation Gi:

Gold BJJ Foundation Gi in blue, black, and white

COLORS: White, Black, Royal Blue

Man, I’m a big fan of Gold BJJ – they make bjj gear that is top quality. I’ve bought their gi’s, rashguards, and even soaps and have never had a problem.

The reason why I’ve chosen this one as the “Best all around Gi” is because it fits perfectly and the material on both the jacket and pants are soft (and not abrasive like other gi’s).

FEATURES:
Rash guard neck liner
Excellent Fit
Drawstring waist closure
Made with pre-shrunk fabric
Reinforced stitching

The Gold bjj gi is a medium-weight, 450gsm pearl weave jacket and ripstop pants weighing 80z, an ideal uniform for your all-around activities in BJJ.

Aside from its weight, features such as a rash guard neck liner and drawstring waist closure are also present in this product. It is convenient and more comfortable to use, perfect for heavy training.

It has a simple design and is heavy-duty, up for long-term use.

4. Hayabusa Ultra-Lightweight Pearlweave Gi:

High-End Gi’s That Are Worth It:

1. Fuji Suparaito BJJ GI

A man wearing FUJI Suparaito BJJ GI in blue

COLORS: Blue

I’ve ranked this as the “Best High End” gi simpy because this is the most comfortable and breathable gi I’ve ever trained in.

Even during those hot training sessions, where I’m getting smothered from mount, I never felt like this gi was adding to my discomfort (and claustrophobia).

Whereas some gis, especially the heavier ones with thicker weaves may feel like you are being weighed down and smothered in your own gi (see the Tatami “Tank” gi or any double weave gi’s meant for Judo), this gi never got in the way.

I strongly prefer more lightweight gi’s so this one hits all my marks.

FEATURES:
Super Lightweight
Stiff collar
Stitching with a Striking Contrast
Drawstring waist closure

As you can see, this type of GI feature is similar to the one above, the Sekai 2.0 BJJ Gi. However, some properties make it differ from them.

The Japanese word Suparaito means “Super Light.”

This Gi has a jacket with a pearl weave and weighs only 350g, making it exceptionally light in weight.

It also has stitchings with a stylish contrast that brings out the sleek design of the GI and makes it look pleasant to the eyes.

COLORS: Black
This is another GI from Fuji, The FUJI Sekai 2.0 BJJ Gi.

FEATURES:
Traditional Jiu Jitsu Gi
Premium cotton blend fabric
Lightweight
Stiff collar
Pants with bungee drawstring

This product is a redeveloped Sekai bjj gi, so this has been improved from the last one, both in appearance and quality performance.

With a 450g pearl woven cotton jacket and pants with three layers of ripstop reinforcement, you can feel how light its weight is when worn.

Its stiff collar with some added stitched rows extremely durable (even from those of us who find themselves being frequently cross collar choked).

All in all, it covers and takes into account durability, comfort, and quality.

3. Kingz Balistico 3.0

A man wearing Kingz Balistico 3.0 in white

COLORS: White, Black, Blue

It has a great combination of comfort and durability- lightweight yet hard-wearing.

BJJ Gi FAQ

How to Pick the Best BJJ Gi for Your Size

When first seeingBrazilian Jiu Jitsu gi sizes, it may seem confusing since you may be looking for size 32 waist and the average S/M/L/XL categories.

However, it’s not that difficult.

Read More: Our full BJJ Sizing Guide

It is very important to select the right size for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis. Gis for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should not betoo baggy, it is all about fit. You don’t want to feel like your outfit is compressing you, but you don’t want to feel like you’re swimming in fabric.

Below are some basic sizing guides, but you should be aware that specific brands may have a different size chart, so it’s always a good idea look at the specific vendors website for their exact sizing.

Remember, this size chart won’t work for everyone. I am 6′ and 210 lbs, and I wear a size A3 in most gi’s – every body type is different and your gi should reflect that.

Most bjj gi brands offer specific sizing charts – since not all manufactures make every size. Again, generally, sizes are based on your height and weight (as seen in our chart below):

  • so if you’re a short/lightweight guy with long arms or a girl with a small waist, choose a smaller size
  • while those with longer torsos, wider shoulders, or larger waists should choose a larger size.

Simply put, training in a gi that is too big or too small will make training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu harder which is something that we definitely don’t need in bjj

The ideal bjj gi should be comfortable, properly fitting, and shouldn’t be your main point of focus on the mat.

BJJ Gi Size: The main numbers to be aware of with gi sizing is:

  • Sizes for BJJ Gis range from A0 to A5 (letter A stands for adult sizing)
  • This letter is followed by a number – and this number dictates how large the gi is (ie. A0-6)
  • You may also see other descriptions such as short, heavy, log – see the chart below for a quick breakdown

Abbr.MeansGood for
AAdult (Men’s)
LLongsomeone who may be too tall for a certain size but too light for the next size up
SShortsomeone who is too heavy for a certain size up but too short for the next size up
HHeavysomeone who is heavier and prefers a wider fit in both jacket and pants
XLExtra Largesomeone who is heavier and prefers a wider fit in both jacket and pants – this is larger than the “heavy” size
*If you don’t currently train any sport or vigorous activity you will likely lose some weight when stating bjj.

Read: More about dieting to lose with with Brazilian jiu jitsu here

Ideally, It’s best to avoid spending hundreds of dollars on a gi you might not fit into in the future if you’re training jiu jitsu to lose weight.

It may be best to go with a solid beginner’s gi like Elite’s or Sanabul’s. before upgrading to a more expensive brand until your weight settles with bjj training.

Alternatively, if you have that annoyingly high metabolism like me and are trying to constantly gain good weight, you may want to have two or more gi’s on hand – one for your bulking season and one for your cutting season.

Should You Buy a Pre-Shrunk Gi?

A second important feature to look for is whether or not the gi has been pre-shrunk.

It is strongly recommended to wash your gi in cold water immeidately after class – letting your gi sit in your sweat to air dry unwashed after class is a guaranteed way to become the smelly kid in class.

If your gi isn’t pre shrunk then washing in cold water and then air drying is the best bet.

However, many brands now pre-shrink their gi’s so this in theory should allow you to wash and dry your gi in any temperate – however, I would still play it safe and wash it in cold water and then hang it to air dry.

It is always recommended that you air dry your BJJ gi, unless you intend to intentionally shrink it.

What Gi Should You Wear to Compete in Jiu Jitsu?

Finally, if you plan to compete, ensure that your BJJ gi meets all the recommended requirements by the organization.

If it is an IBJJF held event here are their standards for gi’s:

  • Gi color must be white, royal blue, or black and gi tops and pants must be matching
  • Gi material must be cotton or cotton-like fabric only
  • Gi patches can only be placed on authorized locations on gi tops and bottoms
  • Gi top must end at the top of competitor’s thigh
  • Gi sleeves cannot be farther than 5cm from wrist bone
  • Gi pants cannot be farther than 5cm from ankle bone

Here is a link the official IBJJF site that goes into further detail on gi requirements

What is the number one BJJ gi?

The number one gi brand would have to be Fuji.

They make affordable gis at top quality and reliabledurability. You aren’t going to get a better value gi at that price range.

What is the best basic BJJ gi?

Our opinion for the best basic BJJ gi, one that makes a great gi for beginners, is the Gold BJJ gi or Fuji All around gi.

These are both basic and affordable gis that make a great starter gi that you likely won’t want to move on from any time soon.

What is the toughest BJJ gi?

The toughest gi for BJJ has to be

For other tough gi’s you can look for a heavier gi like the ones mentioned below. These typically have a heavier material weight (GSM):

Keep in mind that these gis are likely on the more expensive end due to material and quality used*

What Does GSM Mean When Refering to a BJJ GI?

GSM means Grams per Square Meter. This is used as a measurement of the weight of the fabric.

Typically, heavier or tougher gi’s will have a higher GSM

What’s the Difference Between a BJJ Gi or Judo Gi?

  • Cut and fit: BJJ gis are typically cut closer to the body with shorter arms and legs, while Judo gis are looser and have more room for movement.
  • Material: Judo gis are traditionally made of heavier, more durable material, while BJJ gis are often made of lighter, more breathable material.
  • Style: Judo jackets are worn looser with a wider belt, while BJJ jackets are worn tighter with a narrower belt.
  • Usage: BJJ gis are designed for ground work and submission techniques, while Judo gis are designed for throwing and takedowns (so they have to be more durable)

BJJ Weaves and Fabrics Explained

Weave Type Description
Single Weave
Most basic and affordable Lighter compared to double weave but quite similar Comfortable and easy to maintain May not lang longer compared to others because of its durability
Double Weave Same pattern as single weave but the pattern is repeated multiple times Durable and affordable Hard to grip Thicker stitching so can make one sweat more during use
Gold Weave “Best of Both Worlds” : Combination of single and double weaveDurable as a double weave, but lightweight like a single weave More expensive compared to single/double weave Gi but it has great quality and durability like a lightweight gi
Pearl Weave Most popular in the modern day BJJ Gi Extremely durable and lightweight Great for training and competition
Ripstop Ripstop is the material used to reinforce materials in your BJJ Gi, most especially the pants Makes your BJJ Gi more resistant to ripping and tearing during intense training or competition

Single Weave:

There are several types of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis, but the single weave is the most basic and affordable.

My first gi was a single weave from elite sports.

It is popular among grapplers because of its affordability. It is a very similar weave to a double weave, but much lighter. They are great for competitors or training in hot areas. Beginners can also consider using a single weave Gi because it is affordable, comfortable, and easy to maintain.

The one main downside you’ll find with single weave gi’s is their durability. They may not last as long as other gi’s through tough training over the years.

Moreover, single weave gis offer your opponent a good gripping surface, which may prove detrimental in training when you are constantly fighting off that one training partner who seems to have the grip of a silverback gorilla.

Double Weave

As with a single weave gi, the double weave features the same pattern.

With a double weave the pattern is repeated multiple times to make the gi thicker and more durable

Double weave gi’s are a solid option for anyone since it offers durability and decent affordability.

The only issue is that due to the double weave stiching it is thicker than single weave so it will definitely make your sweat more during training.

Finally, unlike single weave, your training partner’s may find it more difficult to get maintain grips on your gi which is a pro for you – and a con for them.

Gold Weave

As the name implies, gold weave is a combination of single and double weave.

Its is designed in part to take the best of both worlds of the single and double weave fabrics.

Its aim to be just as durable as the double weave while avoiding the thickness of material and being as light as the single weave gi.

Gold weaves are proably the most popular gi’s you will see out there today.

Due to the higher standard of gold weaves they are definitely more expensive than single or double weave gi’s, but the price you pay is for quality and durability in a light weight gi.

Pearl Weave

Pearl weave is the most popular fabric in modern day bjj gi’s today. It is extremely durable and lightweight. This means it is pricier than the other more affordable weaves, but it is definitely worth it. I’ve found my pearl weave gi from 93 Brand to be one of my favorite gi’s to train in as well for competition. It just feels lighter and doesn’t feel like I am fighting a burlap sac and my opponent at the time during training.

Ripstop

In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gi, ripstop material is often used to reinforce materials used in gis and specifically gi patns.

If you’ve trained any amount of time in the gi, you’ll know that the pants usually rip first. The moment I start to see a tear around the knee of a gi pant I know it may be time to start thinking about replacing them.

Ripstop reinforces the original fabric with another material so that it is more resistant to ripping and tearing which is key during the intense training of bjj when people are constantly gripping and tearing at your gi pants

Which Material Is Best When Buying a New BJJ Gi?

People tend to make this mistake in thinking what gi type is best – single, double, gold, or pearl weave?

As you get more experienced in Jiu-Jitsu, you’ll discover what you want when it comes to BJJ Gis.

As you try out different gi’s you will ultimately find a preference for one or the other. For me, I prefere a pearl weave gi for its lightweight and durability (even though it may be more expensive).

For now, as long as you know these terms these can help when making you gi buying decisions and fore ultimately developing your own preference.

One very important property to consider is the thickness of the Gi.

*The thicker the Gi, the harder it is for the opponent to grip and manipulate it and the hotter the gi may be to train in.

Basically, if it is harder your opponent to close their fists around your gi material, that’s better for you since it will be harder for them to get and maintain grips.

However, thickness may mean more weight, so this is someting to keep in mind. The weave of the gi will ulitmately determine the thickness so this will also go into your preferred gi.

You will probably sweat a lot when you train in grappling.

Sweating is good – its a sign that your body is working hard and burning calories.

However, if you sweat enough your gi will become wet, soggy, and heavy – and make it harder to train in. It will also make your training more uncomfortable. Training in a soaked gi isn’t fun for you or your partner.

If you want to get rid of all the moisture as fast as possible, choose 100% cotton or ripstop pants and lightweight materials for your top.

Finally one thing that we’d always recommend is making sure your gi pants are re-inforced at the butt and the knees – this is likely where tears in the pants will come first.

Should Your First BJJ Gi Be Expensive?

A common debate among grapplers is whether expensive gis are really worth the money. While most expensive gis are made of high-quality materials, there is more to it.

We tend to lean toward the answer being – no

Yes, its nice to have a high quality gi that will last a long time, but when starting bjj, you are just finding your rhythm – what if the sport isn’t for you? what if you lose or gain weight?

Plus it will take trying a couple different gis to eventually find your ideal materal and weave preference.

Finally, the cost of a BJJ gi is also determined by the design and brand recognition. If a BJJ gi has a detailed design and is well known, the price will generally be higher.

Gi Pants Explained – Ripstop or Cotton Pants

Since cotton is a soft and strong fabric, it has been the original fabric for Jiu Jitsu gi pants for over a century, but now we are seeing the new standard of gi pants move over to ripsto.

The term ripstop refers to a fabric that is made up of several fabrics (including cotton) interwoven to create a weave that is highly resistant to tears and rips.

As a standard fabric for gi pants, ripstop is becoming more and more common. When washed, ripstop pants aslo tend to shrink less than cotton gi pants.

While cotton pants will always likely be around and used in some form of another we recommend going with ripstop gi pants whenever possible for enhanced durability.

Is there a different between a competition gi and training gi?

Jiu Jitsu beginners may get confused when seeing training and competition gis when choosing their first gi. Here is how they differ.

A training gis is usually a single weave jacket or a less expensive gi that is designed for training purposes. They are often cheaper and more colorful than a competition gi.

However, I frequently prefer to train in a pearl weave or other lightweight gi in traing.

The important thing here to note that this all comes down to preference.

Buying a competition gi is only a good idea if you’re planning to compete or you’re already competing in BJJ.

Another thing to make sure of is that your competition gi follows the guildelines of the organization that you’d like to compete in (ie. IBJJF has their own gi standars – see above)

Should You Own Mutliple Gi’s?

If you’re like me you will immediately want to buy several differnt gi’s of different colors, styles, and designes, but realistically, you only need 2 bjj gi’s for weekly training.

As long as you are able to wash you gi and have it dry before your next class I wouldn’t be too concerned with owning more that two or there gi’s at least initially.

If you also feel the need to buy a separate gi for competition only you can add an additionaly one, but I never saw the need to own a gi solely for competition – again totally up to your preference.

How to Wash You Gi

You should wash your gi in cold water immediatley after class and then let hang dry.

For our full, deatiled post on how to wash your gi and gi maintenance tips take a look here

If you wash it in hot water or throw it in the drier it will likely shrink quite a bit so we highly recommed cold water and then hangin it up to dry.

How to Shrink your Gi

If you want to purposefully shrink your gi you can do that by washing it in hot water and throwing it in the drier.

Keep in mind that many gi’s these days are “pre-shrunk” so this should mean that they are safe to through in the driet, but I would proceed with caution. Drying a pre shrunk gi may still mean it can shrink a little bit.

What do you wear under a gi?

It is recommended for practitioners to wear rashguards under their gi jackets. Rashguards can provide protection to your skin during rolling. However, men are not permitted to wear anything under their jackets at IBJJF competitions.

In training, while its recommended to wear a rashguard under your gi you will find some of your training partners wearing a t shirt undernead or shirtless under their gi jacket.

For hygeine’s sake we recommend a rashguard under your gi jacket whenever training.

As with rashguards, compression tights or spats can also be worn under your gi pants. This is not permitted in IBJJF competitions for men, but is allowed for women.

In addition, the IBJJF has specific rules about wearing undergarments beneath your gi for competitions.

Does It Matter What Color Gi You Wear?

In training, as long as your gym allows it, you can realistically wear any gi color or fabric you’d like.

Often times a gym may only allow you to wear their gi brands, but if this is not the case you can likely choose any color.

Additionally, white belts are not forbidden from wearing black, blue or any other color gis in BJJ as a general rule. Before you buy a new gi, check with your instructor or senior students first. Some gyms will recommend that new students purchase a white gi first, and others might have other rules about what colors are allowed.
