Our Top 3 Spats

1. XMartial

PROS AND CONS
+ Thick material
+ Thick waistband
+ Good sizing
Mostly flashy design options

XMartial has become very popular in recent years. Their gear is top quality, and they are known for their standout designs.

Whereas some other cheaper spats like Elite and Sanabul have thinner material and a weak waistband, Xmartial has a thick waistband to keep them from going anywhere, and the material just feels much thicker and durable.

What you have to worry about with more affordable spats are:

  • thin material
  • poor sizing
  • waistband becoming loose over time

The only con to Xmartial is that if you don’t like flashy designs or big logos you may be limited in their selection.

2. Hayabusa Geo Jiu Jitsu Compression Spats

PROS AND CONS
+ Excellent material
+ Rubber waistband liner
+ Rubber ankle liner*
– A bit pricier than other options

SIZES: Small – XX-Large

The Hayabusa Geo Jiu-Jitsu Compression Spats are our number one recommended, high quality option.

The material feels like a mix of spandex and leather and for me and made them more durable and comfortable than other spats. I found these to be made of a thicker material than the other more affordable brands like those from Sanabul or Raven.

They also have both a rubber waistband liner and rubber ankle liner (I haven’t come across any other spats that have these*).

3. FUJI Baseline V2 Jiu Jitsu Spats Compression

PROS AND CONS
+ Made me look good
+ Nice material
+ Drawstring waistband*
+ Good sizing

SIZES: Small – 4X-Large

These Fuji baseline spats stood out to me due to their fit and feel. They just felt both comfortable and durable. They also somehow made my legs look good and not like skinny chicken legs.

These come at a higher price point but if you’re looking for durable, high quality spats these should be one of your top picks.

Everyday Affordable Spats

1. Elite

PROS AND CONS
+ Thicker waistband
+ Affordable
Can be a bit short for some*
Thinner material

SIZES: Small – XX-Large

These are my go-to affordable spats that I train in almost weekly. They fit great and are pretty durable for being on the more affordable end.

They do have a thicker waistband which helps them stay in place, but the actual spat material is on the thinner side.

Again, with more premium spats you usually have thicker and higher quality material like those from Fuji or Hayabusa.

2. Sanabul

PROS AND CONS
+ Affordable
+ Reinforced stitching
Flimsy waistband
Thin material
Waistbands have a tendency to separate
May run short (check sizing)

SIZES: X-Small – XX-Large

Another affordable option for bjj spats are these from Sanabul. I’ve own a couple pairs of these over the years. They get the job done, but you can see why they are more affordable.

You may have some issues with sizing (and them running short on your ankles) or with threads becoming loose rather quickly.

3. Hawk Sports Mens Compression Pants

PROS AND CONS
+ Good length
+ Lightweight and comfortable
Can have problems in sizing

SIZES: 30 – 40

Another more affordable pairs of spats are these from Hawk.

Their quality and durability is pretty comparable to others in this price range like Elite or Sanabul, but what I did like about these is that their length is pretty reliable (at least more reliable than Sanabul).

4. ROAR MMA Sphere Compression Pants

PROS AND CONS
+ Slick designs
+ Affordable
– Had a slight chemical smell to them initially
Thinner material

SIZES: Small – X-Large

ROAR MMA Sphere Compression Pants are a decent option is you prefer flashy designs at a decent price point.

These are pretty affordable, but like other spats I found their material to be on the thinner side. Also they had a bit of a chemical smell to them before I washed them.

5. DEVOPS 2 or 3 Pack Men’s Compression Pants

PROS AND CONS
+ Very affordable (can come in a 2 or 3 pack)
Thinner material
Thin waistband

SIZES: Small – XX-Large

The DEVOPS Men’s Compression Pants are a very affordable pair of spats. They actually sell them in a 2 or 3 pack which is great if you want to keep an extra pair or two in your trunk like me.

They fit decent, but like other cheap spats they have a thinner waistband, and the material feels thinner so I wouldn’t expect them to last too long.

6. LAFROI Men’s Quick Dry Cool Compression Fit

PROS AND CONS
+ Slick designs
+ Affordable
+ Thick waistband
Some prints can be silghtly see through

SIZES: Small – 3X-Large

The LAFROI Men’s Quick Dry Cool Compression Fit spats are pretty similar to other spats in the same affordable price range like Sanabul, Elite, and Hawk.

However, they stand out due to their designs. So if you’re looking for an affordable pair of spats with slick designs this should be your top pick.

7. Raven Fightwear Men’s Kraken Octopus BJJ Spats

PROS AND CONS
+ Standout Designs
+ Reinforced stitching
Does not offer a plain option
– A bit pricier than the other options

SIZES: Small – XX-Large

This one is for you if you are not for plain BJJ spats. Raven has a bunch of awesome design however, come at a slightly higher price point than the spats from LAFROI.

The sublimated graphics on the spats will not peel or fade, ensuring long-lasting durability. It offers protection against scrapes, and mat burns, and is reinforced with flatlock stitching, making it durable.

8. Gold BJJ Jiu Jitsu Spats

SIZES: Small – 3X-Large

PROS AND CONS
+ Good sizing
+ Thinner material
+ Moisture wicking
Seams may come undone in frequent use

Gold BJJ spats are pretty affordable, and I’d personally rank the just above the more affordable options like Elite and Sanabul in terms of quality and fit.

If you want to upgrade slightly without spending $60+ on a more premium pair like those from Hayabusa, Gold BJJ is a good option.

9. Venum Men’s G-Fit Spats

SIZES: Small – 3X-Large

PROS AND CONS
+ Aerated waist fabric
+Thick waistband
– A bit pricier
Not the biggest fan of fabric change around the waist

The Venum Electron G-Fit Spats are another higher quality spats option. I’d consider them on level with other more premium spats like Hayabusa (however, I prefer the fit and feel of Hayabusa spats more).

These do feel high quality, but I’m not really a fan of the change in fabric/color by the waist line. It almost makes it look like they are falling down. This is a purely an aesthetic opinion, but overall these are pretty high quality and at a reasonable price.

10. DRSKIN Men’s Compression Pants

SIZES: Small – 3X-Large

These DRSKIN Men’s Compression Pants are some of the cheaper spats you’ll find out there. They are on par with Elite and Sanabul spats in terms of price, and I’d probably rank them of similar quality.

The only real different between them is that DRSKIN spats offer different designs. So if you want a cheap pair of spats with some slick designs DRSKIN is a good option.

PROS AND CONS
+ Simple and slick designs
+ Affordable
+ UV protection
Might be thin for some
Can have problems in sizing

Why You Can Trust This List

This post is meant to be a full-comprehensive list of the most popular spats for BJJ out there. While I do have first-hand experience training in many of these spats, I can’t say I have experience wearing all of them….since there’s over 50 spats on the list.

some of my notes on each pair of spats

The ones that I am wearing in the above images are the spats that I do have first hand experience wearing and training in.

I also have spent close to 30 hours researching, compiling, ranking and reviewing all of the spats on this list by scouring reviews on amazon, bjj/mma sites, reddit and other bjj/mma forum sites.

I wanted this to be a comprehensive list of all the most popular bjj spats out there. If you are a fan of bjj spats that are not on this list feel free to drop me a line at info@heavybjj.com, and I’ll be sure to review and add them.

Finally, if you are looking to save money on spats and other bjj gear I’m a big fan of bjjhq.com (which does daily deals on bjj apparel and gear. I’ve also listed other bjj gear sites at the bottom of this post too).

Benefits of Wearing Spats for BJJ

Two men sparring using BJJ spats

Hygiene

The benefits of using BJJ spats helps lower the chance of acquiring skin infections by acting as a protective barrier between your skin and any mats or other surfaces, lowering the possibility of skin diseases. In addition, spats can help wick away sweat from your skin.

Performance

BJJ spats can also offer performance benefits for BJJ practitioners. It prevents your skin from rubbing against your training partner’s or the mat, which may help you move more efficiently and effectively. Spats may also offer compression, which has been shown to increase blood flow, decrease muscle fatigue, and ultimately lead to better performance.

Comfort

Wearing BJJ spats can increase comfort during BJJ training and competition. Spats allow you unrestricted movement because of their lightweight and elastic fabric.

It wicks away sweat and provides ventilation. It may help regulate your body temperature and keep you cool and comfortable during training or competitions.

Durability

Many BJJ spats are made from polyester and spandex, providing flexibility and strength. They are typically constructed from long-lasting, high-quality materials that can resist the wear and tear of intense BJJ training and competition to avoid damage and accidents and perform at your best.

What to Look for in Quality Spats for Jiu Jitsu and MMA Training

Material

Look for BJJ spats made from a high-quality blend of materials, such as polyester and spandex, which offer durability and stretch with good stitching. Moisture-wicking spats are also recommended since they will keep you dry and comfy even during your BJJ activities.

Waistband

The waistband is another crucial element to consider when choosing spats. Try to get a snug waistline, and don’t move around when training. An adjustable pair with a drawstring would also be good.

Design

While you choose a design that fits your style and preferences, consider  BJJ spats that can help you in many ways. Look for a pair with flatlock seams that won’t rub against your skin and cause irritation and one with a great compression fit to improve blood flow.

Fit/Length

Try to choose BJJ spats that are not too tight or restricted in their fit. The length of it is a crucial factor to think about. Longer spats give more covering and protection, while shorter (three-quarters in length) spats may allow for more freedom of movement and breathability.

Price

The price of BJJ spats can vary widely depending on the brand, materials, and design. While it’s understandable to want to save money wherever possible, spats of higher quality will likely last longer and function better than their cheaper counterparts and are thus a better investment.

You should emphasize quality and utility above cost but set a reasonable budget.

Spats should be washed and dried separately in cold water.
