Is Submeta Worth It? (Review)

Here is our review of Submeta by Lachlan Giles. Submeta is a somewhat newer option for online Brazilian jiu jitsu learning.

Key Takeaways

  • Submeta stands way above other online BJJ learning options due to (pros):
    • Depth of content – Lachlan explores overall concepts as well as detailed techniques
    • Cost effective – (currently at only $25/month) when compared to other options
    • Frequently updated -to include all the most recent techniques and trends in bjj
    • Detailed troubleshooting sections and review questions – included throughout each course
  • Submeta cons:
    • auto playing the next video may be glitchy sometimes
    • limited courses from other instructors (but more have been released recently)
    • increasing video playback speed must be done with each video in a single course
    • searching within the website on desktop and mobile could be more granular (it is sometimes hard to find a specific video with a specific course)
    • lastly, there is not yet a mobile app

Is Submeta.io Worth It? (My Full Review after 6 Months)

Yes!

Ultimately, for me, I really like Lachlan’s teaching style, the platform’s interactive tools, such as quizzes and exercises, and large amount of detail he provides on troubleshooting why a technique may not be working for you.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of bjj instructionals and online learning. Even before submeta, I always really liked the way Lachlan Giles taught techniques and provided instruction.

The reason why I choose submeta over other options are that it includes detailed troubleshooting sections that go over why a technique may or may not be working for me. The courses also include review questions throughout which help me better retain what I’m learning.

As you can see I spent a large amount of time learning wrestling with Lachlan’s “Head Inside Single Course” with Talgat Ilyasov

The review questions really helped retain what I was watching, and if I got the answer wrong it provided a link to the section where it was explained. I haven’t come across any other online bjj instruction that includes these type of questions.

Main Reasons You Should Consider Submet.io:

  • if you like Lachlan’s teaching style
  • if you enjoy review questions and troubleshooting sections
  • if you want to structure your own bjj learning (which you should)
  • if you want to stay up to date on the most recent trends and techniques

How Does It Stack Up Against Other Services (Like BJJ Fanatics)

There are many different services that offer free and paid online Brazilian jiu jitsu training. If I had to choose my two favorites they would be:

  • Submeta
  • BJJ Fanatics

Submeta differs from the one time purchase model of BJJ Fanatics in that it:

  • is a monthly fee (more affordable)
  • covers a wider range of bjj positions and techniques
  • includes review questions
  • includes troubleshooting sections

The main issue I run into with BJJ Fanatics is that when you buy one of their instructionals not only are they expensive, but they only usually cover a single position or technique. Plus, I’ve, personally, found I don’t retain the info as much when compared to courses on Submeta.

Who Can Benefit from Using Submeta?

Anyone who enjoys learning on their own can definitely benefit from Submeta. At a lower price, its super easy to dive into a broader course or a detailed breakdown of a specific technique or submission.

  • If you’re a beginner, it can provide a solid road map to increase your improvement rate
  • If you’re more advanced, it can help sharpen your weaker areas and explore new techniques

Ultimately, for me, I really like Lachlan’s teaching style, the platform’s interactive tools, such as quizzes and exercises, and large amount of detail he spends on troubleshooting why a technique may not be working for you.

Simply put, submeta.io is a great option for online BJJ learning from Lachlan Giles. It includes detailed instruction, interactive quizzes, and comprehensive troubleshooting sections at an affordable monthly price.
